Computers and a larger working human memory, what's the win?

I think most people would agree that a superior memory is a desirable thing, one area that computers excel in is storing information. I have been studying professor Hawkins work on the human brain and I like the idea that our human memories are stored in many neocortical columns.

Working memory is a crucial cognitive system that allows humans to temporarily store and manipulate information for various cognitive tasks. It serves as a workspace for the brain, enabling individuals to process and manage information in real-time. Here are some key functions of working memory:

1. **Temporary Storage:** Working memory holds and maintains information for short periods, allowing individuals to keep relevant data in mind while performing cognitive tasks.

2. **Problem Solving:** It plays a vital role in problem-solving by allowing individuals to keep track of intermediate steps and relevant information while working through a problem.

3. **Decision Making:** Working memory is involved in decision-making processes, as it enables individuals to consider various options, weigh pros and cons, and make choices based on current information.

4. **Language Comprehension and Production:** Working memory is essential for understanding and producing language. It helps individuals keep track of the meaning of a sentence or a conversation as it unfolds.

5. **Learning and Academic Performance:** Working memory is closely linked to learning and academic success. It aids in tasks such as reading comprehension, mathematical problem-solving, and understanding complex concepts.

6. **Attention Control:** Working memory helps control and regulate attention. It allows individuals to focus on relevant information while filtering out distractions.

7. **Multitasking:** When individuals engage in multitasking, working memory helps them switch between different tasks and keep relevant information in mind for each task.

8. **Spatial Reasoning:** Working memory is involved in spatial tasks, such as mentally rotating objects or navigating through a space.

9. **Following Instructions:** It assists in following and remembering instructions, allowing individuals to carry out multi-step tasks efficiently.

10. **Creativity:** Working memory is also implicated in creative thinking, as it enables individuals to hold and manipulate various ideas and concepts in their minds.

Overall, working memory is a dynamic and flexible cognitive system that supports a wide range of mental activities, contributing to the efficient execution of everyday tasks and complex cognitive processes.
